A candle lighting ceremony, thought Wes as he fought the tide of end-of-day beachgoers at Magic Island. Kind of a girlie thing to do to mark the first anniversary of Howard's death, but then Kim was a girl, and she'd organized it. She hadn't asked Wes what he thought would be appropriate. If she had, he probably would have told her to throw a kegger. That's what Howard would have done.
That's what Howie did, as a matter of fact. Drank a whole damned keg's worth and then drove his car off an S curve coming down Tantalus. Howie might have been the best friend Wes ever had, but he was also among the dumbest of human beings. Still...
